Mary Frank, born in London in 1933 to an American Abstract painter and and English musicologist and art critic, Mary was evacuated to various church settings in the English countryside and then moved to New York during World War ll, and trained in dance with Martha Graham, before studying drawing with Max Bechman and Hans Hoffmann, among others. She is known primarily as a figurative sculptor, painter and printmaker/illustrator. She married Robert Frank and drove across the United States with him while he photographed the work that was later published as "The Americans". Widely acclaimed since the late 1970s as a figurative sculptor in clay, she is also a superb draftsman, creating drawings, mono prints and illustrations for books. More recently, she has turned to painting, where she began to work in color.
