''"HEROIC AND TRAGIC SCULPTURES FROM DISCARDED DETRITUS"''

Andrew Nigon is a sculptor who evokes a self-described circus aesthetic and religious iconography with his creations, using polyurethane foam, discarded clothing, parts from previous sculptures, and all sorts of found objects in order to draw attention to the parallax nature of our contemporary existence, in which, he says, "we have an insatiable drive to improve while living in a state of constant decay".

His Inspiration gleans from memories of fantastical childhood celebrations and family vacations, specifically objects that reflected times of seemingly limitless deservedness. Using the discarded detritus of society in chorus with materials such as polyurethane foam and platinum silicone, he recreates relics that represent heroic yet tragic monuments existing in an incomplete and fractured world. The drive of this work is to develop seductive and tortured characters that permanently exist halfway from somewhere to nowhere.

Andrew says… "There is no 'happily ever after'. Not really. Even my process is made up of a combination of building up and tearing down with the final product existing somewhere in between. I always try to balance any painful characteristics that my work may possess with bright playful colors. I imagine all of my work as living things that have stories told through their scars and imperfections."

Andrew Nigon was born and raised in Rochester, MN in 1981 and received his MFA from the University of South Florida in 2011. He has shown extensively throughout South Florida and has participated in exhibitions, projects, and residency programs nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in Vogue Italia, Wonderland Magazine and Beautiful Decay Magazine.

Nigon is represented by Primary Projects in Miami, and is currently preparing for his second solo show there. He lives and works in Miami, Florida
