''"RECENT WORK"''

“And I said, that last thing is what you can’t get Carlo. Nobody can get to that last thing. We keep on living on catching it once and for all.” This quote from Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, reflects the process in my work from the beginning until now. Hence, I bring to my process this element of diversity through the process of uncertainty….Each of my works is its own “aphorism” to quote a phrase from Anthony Elms' essay in the 2014 Whitney Biennial Catalog; Each is “Its own escape, its own scenario, at the ever ready.” Each piece has its own life not necessarily dependent on the last work created. Each piece has its own voice which in turn speaks to the individual viewer to whom it reaches. Each piece rejects the colonial power of its predecessors. So, when I take my materials and ideas at hand, I never know what the end will bring. Each work is its own event.

I have lived by the sea my whole life; every day is different. Some days it is calm, or angry, or clear green or brown; the sea each day is its own irregular self. Paradoxically, this irregularity is what makes the sea consistent. My process reflects this process of change and flux, with risk-taking and chance left to determine the outcome...a celebration of the aesthetic of uncertainty.

Clarence “Skip” Measelle is nationally known for his multi media paintings. He has had a 1600 sq. ft. studio on Georgia Avenue for 28 years. He has explored many mediums, techniques and directions, including acrylic paint and mediums, various gels, photocopy transfers, photos, collage, interference and iridescent acrylics, fluorescent acrylic, oxidized iron (rust) in acrylic, clear resin, various archival inks, metallic spray paint, permanent markers and archival ink jet on paper and canvas with mixed mediums. For the past 10 years, until last spring, he taught as a painting and drawing professor at Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth. Currently, he teaches one mixed medium painting class at the Armory, where he has taught since the school opened, and shares his many techniques with his students.

Skip grew up in Lake Worth, making art since childhood. After college, he taught art in the Palm Beach County public school system for 8 1/2 years, while painting every day into the late evening. He had his first one-man show, of Photorealist paintings, at the Norton Museum in 1975. This led to exhibiting in various galleries on Worth Avenue, which led to 5 shows at the "Jack Gallery" in SOHO in NYC. His work gradually became more Abstract Illusionist, and his paintings at one exhibition sold out during the opening...in February, historically the gallery's worst month for sales. Jack Gallery was one of a chain of 40 galleries around the country, and he was then signed to an exclusive exhibition agreement, and given 3 shows a year, in some of the best locations in the country. These galleries closed in the recession following the first Gulf War, but he has continued to show work in numerous other galleries from Key West to Los Angeles. He also works with corporate art consultants in NY, FL, and CA, as well as collectors who have been following his work since his first exhibition.
