''FLOWER WARS''

John William Bailly is a French–American artist, born in Slough, UK, and based in Lyon and Miami. Bailly has spent his career exposing consistencies and controversies within accepted written histories to understand the larger enigma that is humanity. He is an Artist-in-Residence Fellow at the Deering Estate in Miami. The Deeting Estate website explains: "John William Bailly has spent the last four years embedded in the Deering Estate as the inaugural McCormick Art Fellow. During his tenure, Bailly has transformed his Power House studio into a salon that welcomes artists, students, guests and creatives alike to enter into his hub of creative energy. The culminating exhibition of his residency 'In Situ', brings the vitality of Bailly’s studio practice into the Deering Estate’s Great Hall gallery.: In Situ includes a series of paintings and drawings created by Bailly at the Deering Estate, with references to the Burial Mound and The Cutler Fossil Site. The exhibition is on display daily, through November 13, 2022."...."A short biographical documentary by Jorge Gonzalez Graupera commissioned by the Deering Estate accompanies the exhibition. This film highlights the process-based facet of Bailly’s practice at the Deering Estate, that include early morning hikes to draw in the nature preserve, as well as canoeing out to the barrier islands surrounding the Estate on Biscayne Bay."

John William Bailly received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University, and has been a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College at Florida International University since 2004. His work explores history and culture, with an emphasis on the Transatlantic dialogue. His paintings explore the question of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture.

Bailly's works have been exhibited at University of Maine Museum of Art, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Art, John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Texas State University, as well as other venues in the US and France. He was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists and a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant.

In 2007, Bailly and critically acclaimed poet Richard Blanco produced a collaborative project, Place of Mind. At FIU, Bailly is the Faculty Director of Honors France, Italy, and Spain study abroad, annually leading students throughout Western Europe for three months. He has been awarded two Excellence in Teaching awards and a European Union grant for course development. His work was recently acquired by the Perez Art Museum of Miami, the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum and the Zillman Art Museum in Maine.

Bailly is represented by LnS Gallery in Miami and his work is available at Clamp Art in New York City.
