Jared McGriff uses imagined portraiture and landscape to explore critical relationships. As he says: "Relationships between individuals, between individuals and the environment, and finally, relationship with the self. It is work that seeks to generate questions and conversation about how people see themselves and relate to each other and their environment.

In this spirit, my work conveys shape, color, shadows, fragments and other visual distortions that the human eye captures and records in our sub/unconscious mind. By producing images that are somewhat familiar yet very unfamiliar in proportion or otherwise abstracted, my intention is to lead the viewer to engage with their sub/unconscious to better understand and interrogate the inputs into their own perception.

Through sketching and spontaneous mark making, I work out ideas and document not only my surroundings but also memories of previous surroundings and imagined environments. These works seek to generate explorations about memory and connection with each other and the natural environment."


Jared McGriff was born in Los Angeles, and raised in Tulare, California. He received his BA in architecture from the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley and his MBA from New York University. McGriff's works have been exhibited nationally, including a solo exhibition, Where We Are You (2022), at NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale. His work can be found in the collections of NSU Art Museum, Rubell Museum, and ICA Miami, among others. Represented by Spinello Projects, solo exhibitions with the gallery include Alone, Together (2019) and Only Touching the Ground to Jump (2020). McGriff was a winner of the 2021 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship and the recipient of the 2022 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art. He is currently based in Miami, Florida.
